A man has died and another has suffered injuries after an excavator rolled at a railway worksite in northern Tasmania.

Tasmania Police said emergency services were called to the scene at Evandale, south of Launceston, about 10:40am today.

Upon arrival, police found a man trapped by an excavator.

The man, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.

Police said another man received "non-life threatening injuries" in the accident and was taken to the Launceston General Hospital "as a precaution".

Work Safe Tasmania is investigating the incident, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Senior Sergeant Mike Gillies said while investigations were still being completed, it "appeared the deceased male was the driver when the machine rolled over".

He said the man was from Victoria.

Senior Sergeant Gillies said those who were at the scene had received counselling.

"Given the weight of the excavator and the location it is in, we have brought in a large crane and two other excavators to move the excavator that has come off the rail line."

In a statement, TasRail said: "Management and staff extend their deepest sympathies and support to all those who have been affected by the workplace incident at Evandale today, especially to those in its highly valued contracting team."

"We are working with our customers at the moment to minimise any disruptions. TasRail's priority is assisting emergency service and the investigation process."

Roadblocks were put in place in the area, with motorists urged to make alternate arrangements while investigations take place.
