UEFA have condemned the violent clashes between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb fans that led to the death of one man ahead of their Champions League qualifier.
Local police say up to 120 Dinamo fans confronted their opponents’ supporters at AEK’s OPAP Arena in the Greek capital late on Monday night, as flares, makeshift explosives and other projectiles were hurled between the groups.
The scenes continued for over an hour and led to the death of a 29-year-old man after being stabbed several times.
Three other Athens fans and five Croatian fans were treated for injuries with 98 arrested.
UEFA have postponed the third-round qualifier, which was due to take place on Tuesday night.
A statement read: “UEFA deplores in the strongest possible terms the appalling incidents that took place in Athens last night and resulted in the loss of a life.
“While expressing our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim, to AEK Athens FC and its fans, we would like to reiterate that violence has no place in our sport and we expect that those responsible for this terrible act be arrested and consigned to justice in the shortest delay.”
A Dinamo statement read: “Such events are not in line with the values and ethics we promote as a club and community.”
