Man dies after suffering medical episode at wheel before crashing into central reservation

A man has tragically died after suffering a medical episode at the wheel before crashing into a central reservation barrier.

The driver had been travelling on the M61 on Tuesday (15 November) approaching junction four for Atherton when the smash happened, police said.

He's understood to have fallen ill before his vehicle collided with the central reservation of the busy motorway. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details about the man's age or identity have been revealed at this stage. No more details about the nature of the medical episode have been confirmed.

A stretch of the M61 was closed for several hours on Tuesday in both directions following what traffic officers described as a 'serious incident.'

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene of the crash, and traffic officers were also in attendance.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Fatal RTC M61 J4 Northbound - Male driver has been travelling northbound on the M61 approaching junction 4.

"He is believed to have suffered a medical episode behind the wheel and collided with the central reservation barrier. He was unfortunately pronounced deceased by paramedics."
