Man dies after police chase on M25

A man has died after a police chase on the M25 near Upminster.

The Metropolitan Police said officers signalled for a car to stop on the busy motorway shortly before 1pm on Friday.

When the car failed to pull over the police initiated a pursuit.

The car collided with the roadside barrier on the A127 slip road in Upminster at the junction with the M25.

Officers provided first aid before the London Ambulance Service arrived but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no-one else in the vehicle.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told the Standard their first medics arrived at the scene in around six minutes.

The spokesperson said: “We were called at 12:57pm on Friday 23 February to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction between the M25 and A127, Upminster.

“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, a medic in a fast response car and an incident response officer.

“Our first medics arrived on scene in around six minutes.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The Met Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who are investigating the incident.

The collision is also being investigated by the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command alongside the Directorate of Professional Standards.

Witnesses are asked to call 101, ref 3090/23Feb.
