A man plummeted to his death while repairing a Ferris wheel at a US fairground.
Robert Sanger was killed after falling from a lift on the ride at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, New Jersey, on Monday morning.
The 62-year-old, who worked as a subcontractor for Cargo Tech International, was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on his arrival at the nearby Shore Medical Centre.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting an investigation into the incident, according to The Press of Atlantic City.
The circumstances of how Sanger fell from the lift are not yet known.
In a statement, the president of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, Jay Gillian said: "We are saddened to report that an employee of a subcontractor working on a lift at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier suffered a fatal injury Monday morning.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. We are co-operating with all appropriate authorities to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragic accident. As we get more information we will provide it."
Gillian, who is also running for re-election as mayor of Ocean City, announced on Tuesday that he was "suspending all campaign activity effective immediately" following the tragic incident.
Gillian’s Wonderland Pier was reportedly closed for business on Monday afternoon but there was no sign that any work was being carried out.
Signs saying “Crime Scene Do Not Cross” could be seen near the Ferris wheel in addition to a blue lift with its platform set at an angle.
The platform appeared to be approximately 15 feet from the ground but it was not clear whether it was the same lift from which Sanger fell.
