A car has ended up in the front yard of a house in Canberra's north, after a fatal crash in the early hours of this morning.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene on Antill Street in Watson at 2:45am.

They found a station wagon that had gone off the road, crashed into a tree and ended up facing the wrong way in the front yard of a nearby house.

The 44-year-old man behind the wheel died at the scene.

It is the second death on the ACT's roads this year.

ACT Policing Acting Detective Inspector Paul Hutcheson said the cause of the single-vehicle crash was not clear, but it was likely that speed was a factor.

"Looking at the damage to the vehicle, one could make the assumption that there was some speed involved in this, but the actual range of that speed is not yet known," he said.

"The vehicle suffered significant front-end damage when it left the roadway for an unknown reason, collided with a tree and ended up in the front yard of a residence. No other people were hurt."

Acting Inspector Hutcheson urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

"That also goes for anyone in the area [who] might have CCTV of the vehicle passing their residence," he said.

An investigation is underway and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
