A man has died after being trapped under a five-tonne concrete slab for more than seven hours.
Jose Pereira, 43, who worked for Ferguson Construction Inc., was first trapped under the concrete slab at around 2.30pm on Friday after an eighth-floor balcony collapsed onto the seventh floor in the Spinnaker Condominium Complex in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, US
The building was reportedly built in the 1970s.
It is thought that the balcony, attached to Unit 712, weighed in excess of 11,000lbs (five tonnes) as Jose succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10pm by a Cape May forensic nurse.
One witness told CBS News: "Just total chaos. Just people screaming. I called 911 right away.
"And it's just 20 minutes later, I heard him screaming again. I guess he was saying get it off of me, and I never heard anything [after]."
Issues around Jose's rescue hampered the police's efforts as the surrounding area had "significant cracks", according to Sea Isle Police Department, and the building was regarded as unsafe to enter.
Following the arrival of more equipment, authorities managed to stabilise the balcony and cutting into the reinforced concrete.
Heavy lift airbags were used to free Jose from under the balcony.
It is believed private engineers will conduct inspections on the condominium, with residents unable to return until all checks are complete. Police are currently investigating the incident.
Earlier this month, one person died in San Francisco following a house explosion which erupted into flames in a massive blast captured on CCTV.
Emergency services rushed to the residence in San Francisco's Sunset District in California, US, at around 9.20am local time (5.20pm UK time) and extinguished the fire on February 9.
Investigators sifted through the rubble before discovering evidence of a possible illegal narcotics manufacturing lab.
Footage from surveillance cameras at the location shows the infrastructure of the building scrambling and bursting into flames and a massive plume of smoke spreading in the air after the explosion.
The body of a disabled woman, who hasn't been identified, was also recovered from the debris.
Police identified a suspect, 53-year-old Darron Price of San Francisco, on the unit block the next day and arrested him in relation to the incident.
Price is being held in San Francisco County Jail on charges of involuntary manslaughter, manufacturing narcotics, and child endangerment.
Police confirmed that Price lived in the home at the time of the explosion but they did not provide further details on his relationship with the other occupants.
The blast that shook the neighbourhood also deemed two adjacent homes uninhabitable, while around a dozen other homes in the area were also affected by the damage.
