Man dies after being run over by own car during robbery in Clondalkin

A man has died after he was run over by his own car while attempting to foil its theft in Clondalkin last Sunday.

Ian McDonnell was found with life threatening injuries at around 6:15pm on Robinhood Road.

Mr McDonnell, 50, tried to stop his car from being stolen at his business premises but was carried on the bonnet of the vehicle to where he was discovered.

He was raced Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition but died yesterday evening.

The car fled the scene and was located on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12 yesterday.

Gardai say a second vehicle involved in the incident was stolen in Crumlin last Sunday and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday.

Both cars have been recovered to be forensically examined.

A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai are anxious to hear from anyone who may have been in the Robinhood Road area of Clondalkin on the evening of Sunday 23 January between 5:30pm and 7:00pm and who may have witnessed any activity which drew their attention or who may have any video dash cam footage.

“The grey coloured Volkswagen Passat 161 OY 1861 stolen at the incident on the 23 January 2022 has been recovered on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12, on Friday 28th January.

“Where was that vehicle between Sunday 23 January and Friday 28 January, 2022?

“The silver coloured Toyota Aqua was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday 23 January, 2022 and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday 25 January, 2022.

“Where was that vehicle between Sunday 23 January and Tuesday 25 January, 2022?"

Gardai are looking for any information on where either car was parked or if they were seen in any petrol station or at any other location.

They are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen either of the cars in Ballymount, Walkinstown, Tallaght, Kylemore Road, or Ballyfermot between 6:30pm and 9:00pm on Sunday night 23 January, 2022.
