Man detained under Mental Health Act after climbing onto car park roof

A man was detained under the Mental Health Act after climbing onto the roof of a multi-storey car park in Manchester city centre.

Police closed off Oxford Street at around 9pm last night after the man scaled the building. The busy road was taped off between Chepstow Street and Whitworth Street.

Firefighters and police helped get the man down from the roof of the NCP car park building. He was then detained under the Mental Health Act, a spokesperson for GMP said this morning.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 8:15pm on Tuesday 6 September 2022, we were called to an incident on Oxford Street in the City Centre regarding the concern for the welfare of a man. Emergency services responded to assist at the scene with the man later being detained safely under the mental health act."

Yesterday, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 9pm this evening (Tuesday 6th September), three fire engines from Moss side, Salford Central and Manchester Central fire station along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton were called to reports of a person on the roof of a multi-storey car park on Oxford Street, Manchester.”

“The crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used specialist equipment and worked with colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to assist the man off the roof of the car park. Firefighters were in attendance for around half an hour.”
