Man dead, others in critical condition after car crash on Sturt Highway near Wagga Wagga

A 30-year-old South Australian man has died and multiple other people are in a critical condition after a serious multi-vehicle crash in southern New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to the Sturt Highway near Yarragundry, west of Wagga Wagga, about 12:40pm.

Riverina Police District officers attended the scene and found one car carrying two people and another car carrying four people had been involved in a head-on collision, with multiple people trapped.

NSW Ambulance Rescue, Volunteer Rescue Association and RFS crews freed the trapped occupants.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His male passenger was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a critical condition.

The driver and passengers of the other vehicle — two women and two men — were also treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, each in a critical condition.

It was the third fatal accident on the region's roads in less than a week.

A 56-year-old man died after a crash north of Albury on Friday and a six-year-old boy died near Moulamein on Thursday.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation has started into the circumstances surrounding today's crash.

The Sturt Highway has been closed in both directions near Churches Plain Road and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Police are still assessing the scene.
