Man critical after running from police, jumping from Adelaide Festival Plaza balcony

The man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition. (ABC News: Che Chorley)

A man is in a critical condition after he ran from police and jumped off a balcony at Adelaide's Festival Plaza early on Tuesday morning.

SA Police said officers approached the Gepps Cross man, 20, at the Festival Plaza about 2:15am and spoke to him for "several minutes" as part of an investigation into a nearby theft.

But the man later ran and jumped off the Festival Plaza concourse and fell several metres onto the ground below, police said.

"Officers provided first aid and the 20-year-old Gepps Cross man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition," police said in a statement.

Police said investigations were continuing into the incident.
