Man 'could've died' while walking his puppy after they were hit by car

A man "could have died" after being hit by a car on a main road.

Gareth Gray, 26, was walking his eight-month old American Pocket Bully, Skye, at 7pm on Monday evening. But he says while they were crossing a clear road near Whiston Hospital, a silver car came out of nowhere.

Hitting them both, the 26-year-old said he feared for his life as he told the ECHO the driver did not stop. He said: "I always take the dog out that route, we go the park most days and it's usually an OK road but I wasn't expecting a car to come flying.

"It's made even me wary to go that way. I said to my partner that I could have died but luckily someone was watching over us, it could've been much worse."

Gareth is now appealing for anyone with information or who may have seen the incident after reporting it to police. He added: "I left the house and was outside for ten minutes. I started to cross and I saw a silver car turn right coming at me, all I saw was a bonnet and tried to get away as fast as I could. It was in the wrong lane.

"I yanked the dog lead but she's a bully so is heavy, but I tried to yank her out of the way when the lead broke. The lead just came flying out of my hand, there was an old lady also in the road but luckily enough the car didn't touch her.

"My dog ran across the road going back towards the way we came so I had to run after her and get her home but the driver of the car didn't even stop. Luckily the injuries are nothing serious, Skye is cut and shaken up and she's not going to want to go on a walk any time soon.

"She was already timid and wary of cars and it's put us back a few more steps now. I have no broken bones, I'm in a bit of pain but luckily nothing too concerning."

Merseyside Police confirmed the force is appealing for information. A spokesperson added: "At around 7pm, we received a report that a silver Mercedes car had collided with a man in his 20s at the junction of Warrington Road and Dragon Lane.

"It was reported that the driver of the vehicle was travelling on the wrong side of the road and failed to stop following the collision. The pedestrian suffered a slight leg injury.
