Video shared with the ECHO shows one of the men involved in the altercation sitting on the floor of the street with the broken leg. In the image, the man seen wearing shorts and trainers is holding his badly injured limb. The ECHO has chosen to blur out the detail of the injury in the photo due to the severity of the leg break.
Today, Sunday June 25, Merseyside Police said there was no further update on the incident. Last night the force will be looking at CCTV footage to establish what happened during the incident which happened earlier this evening.
Images sent to the ECHO showed an extensive police presence on the famous street which was filled with punters out enjoying Saturday night. Originally a large number of police vehicles flooded the area and cordoned off part of the street next to clothing store Reiss. Later an eyewitness told the ECHO officers appeared to be carrying out a fingertip search looking for evidence.
In a statement on the incident, Inspector Nathan Stockley said: "The full circumstances of what happened are being pieced together by detectives. There were a large number of people at the pub and in the Mathew Street area who may have witnessed the disturbance, the lead up to it and the assaults, which left two men injured.
"It is important that people come forward and tell us what happened. The use of violence in our communities will not be tolerated by Merseyside Police and I would urge anyone who saw anything that could help us, to please come forward."
