Manchester City young midfielder Rowan McDonald is among the academy players at the club to be handed a new contract as he looks to bounce back from missing two years of football.
McDonald has come up through the City academy and was captain for the Premier League U18 Cup success back in 2019 in a team that also included Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Felix Nmecha. The Oldham-born prospect was also part of a group of six including Tommy Doyle and Morgan Rogers who took part in a running challenge during the pandemic to raise money for the NHS.
However, the 20-year-old suffered a serious injury and subsequent setbacks that have seen him unable to play for the last two seasons with his progress frustratingly stalled as his teammates have moved forward with their careers. At the end of his contract, City have renewed it for another year.

McDonald is expected to take part in pre-season training with the Under-23s and build himself back to full fitness and games before deciding whether to seek a loan for competitive football. City are happy to see the versatile player get back to his level after two years of misery with injuries.
City's academy is hoping for a calmer pre-season this summer after they suffered a Covid outbreak last summer on a trip away to Loughborough that caused parts of the City training ground shut down when they tried to relocate. Pep Guardiola and his first-team squad are back from Monday ahead of their US tour.
