Man City youngster Rico Lewis makes Champions League history with goal

Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis will not forget the win over Sevilla in a hurry. The 17-year-old restored parity just after the interval with a fine finish after a clever through ball from Julian Alvarez. In doing so, Lewis set a competition record.

The full-back became the youngest player in UEFA Champions League history to score on his first start in the competition. In doing so he beat the previous record set by Karim Benzema in 2005.

The teenager from Bury also became City 's youngest-ever goalscorer in the Champions League at aged 17 years and 346 days. Among English players, only Jude Bellingham was younger - at 17 years and 289 days - when he scored in Europe's top competition.

City went on to win the match 3-1 and finish the group stage unbeaten with 14 points. Lewis had only made four substitute appearances prior to tonight but Pep Guardiola had no hesitation in handing him his maiden senior start - and he was duly repaid.

Owen Hargreaves, the former City midfielder appearing on BT Sport, said: "His goal reminded me of (Pablo) Zabaleta. He used to make that run, a natural one for the full-back.

Fellow former City man Joleon Lescott added: "It was a hugely special moment for him. He would have been in this position multiple times in academy matches. This is how they play, the same as the first team.

"He looked like he was at home."
