Man City youngster Liam Delap reacts to breaking goal drought

Manchester City youngster Liam Delap admits he is relieved to be back on the goal trail.

The striker has endured a tough time of it since making a season-long loan switch to Championship side Stoke City. Six appearances for the Potters have yet to yield a goal for the 19-year-old. But he will be hoping a strike on international duty will be just the boost to kickstart his prowess in front of goal for his temporary employers.

Delap was one of three City youngsters — along with Callum Doyle and Finley Burns — in the England under-20s' starting XI for their 3-0 win over Chile in the Costa Cálida Supercup. He notched inside 10 minutes, applying the finishing touch to a cross from Sam Iling-Junior.

Further goals from Daniel Oyegoke and Sam Edozie completed a comfortable win for Ian Foster's side, who are building up towards next summer’s FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia.

After the strike, Delap took to social media to share his relief. The forward, who last year signed a bumper new deal which keeps him at the Etihad until 2026, wrote on Instagram: “Nice to be back with the boys.”

England take on Morocco in their next game on Saturday.
