Man City women's boss reacts to first WSL defeat in 15 games as title race hots up

Man City manager Gareth Taylor has refused to concede the WSL title race despite a crucial 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

City took the lead at Arsenal thanks to a classic Khadija Shaw header. But the Gunners produced an outstanding second-half comeback thanks to goals from Frida Maanum and Katie McCabe. The visitors had gone on a 14-match league unbeaten run ahead of their trip to North London but slipped to fourth in the table with the defeat, with Arsenal above them on goal difference and Chelsea and Man Utd second and first respectively.

But despite the defeat Taylor still believes there are more twists and turns to follow in the WSL title race. City still have to travel to league leaders United before the season ends, with Chelsea and Arsenal also meeting.

"Nothing changes," he said. "There are still important games to play, five games left for us.

"Teams still have to play each other so I’m sure there will be a few more twists and turns. Nothing changes in our mindset, we’re still going for it.

"We need to win the next game and the one after that and all of the remaining ones. That’s what we came here to do today."

City were particularly dominant in the first half as Arsenal struggled to get a grip on the game. Shaw forced a good save from Sabrina D'Angelo, while Lauren Hemp missed a sitter at the back post and England team-mate Chloe Kelly also went close.

And Taylor saw plenty of positives to take from the performance.

"I think we showed some good stuff in the first half," added Taylor. "We showed some real top football. Like I say, the chances we had were good as well. Lauren's (Hemp) one was a big chance, if we pull ahead there we kill the game.

"We didn't see enough of that probably in the second half and should've scored more when we had the momentum.

"Sometimes if 1-0 has to be enough, then it has to be enough. It's frustrating, and a real opportunity we've not been able to take. But there's a lot of positives to pick out of the play we had and the performances."
