Man City vs Man Utd player ratings: Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial disappoint as Fred stars again

Manchester City survived a fightback from Manchester United to book their place in the Carabao Cup final against Aston Villa.

James Robson was in place at the Etihad to run the rule over both Manchester clubs.

Manchester City

Claudio Bravo: 5

Rarely tested – but beaten by the first shot on target.

Kyle Walker: 7

Strong on the right of a back three. Used the ball intelligently under little pressure and forced a flying save from De Gea.

Nicolas Otamendi: 7

Commanding in the middle of Walker and Cancelo. Won pretty much everything on the ground and in the air.

Joao Cancelo: 7

Kept City on the front foot, carrying the ball out of the defence. Dealt well with James’ pace.

Rodri: 6

Just kept the ball moving for City and kept United chasing it.

Ilkay Gundogan: 6

Brilliant through-ball for Sterling could’ve provided a goal. Should have done better with his own chance in the second half.

Raheem Sterling: 6

Always a threat, but he wasted a golden chance to kill the game off and just doesn’t seem to be decisive enough in front of goal at the moment 6

Bernardo Silva: 5

Poor clearance led to Matic’s goal. Largely kept quiet by United’s deep-lying defence.

Kevin De Bruyne: 6

Some of his trademark incisive passing cut United open. Can do almost anything with the ball at his feet and was a constant source of pressure.

Riyad Mahrez: 5

Kept finding space on the right, but didn’t do enough with it.

Sergio Aguero: 7

Forced his good friend De Gea to be at his best. Brilliant movement in the final third. Wonderful finish was ruled out for offside.

David Silva (for Mahrez, 68): 5

Brought on to open United up, but rarely did.

Jones Stones (for De Bruyne, 90)

To late to mark

Gabriel Jesus (for Aguero, 90)

To late to mark

Not used: Ederson, Zinchenko, Foden, Garcia

Manchester United

David De Gea: 9

This was De Gea back to his very best. Some wonderful early saves and a brilliant challenge to deny Aguero. Produced more heroics after the break.

(REUTERS)

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 8

Gets United out of a lot of trouble with his pace and fantastic timing of tackles. Makes it look like an art form.

Victor Lindelof: 6

Too many heart-in-the-mouth moments from him, but just about got the job done.

Harry Maguire: 7

Some really important tackles in a generally dominant display. Caught out by Aguero in the second half, but made up for it with recovery challenge to deny Gundogan an almost certain goal.

(AP)

Luke Shaw: 7

Shown another side to his game in recent weeks as part of a back three. Another really solid display.

Brandon Williams: 7

Had to take risks, despite the threat of Mahrez and generally kept him quiet.

Fred: 9

So important in breaking the City press with a turn of skill in United’s final third. Used the ball better than anyone in red. The type of performance that justifies the interest Guardiola once had in him.

(Getty Images)

Nemanja Matic: 6

Wonderful goal with United’s first shot of the match and defended manfully. Red card was a case of taking one for the team 6

Jesse Lingard: 4

His touch let him down so often. Plenty of energy, but his use of the ball just wasn’t good enough.

Mason Greenwood: 3

Just didn’t get into the game – but had no service, so it’s hard to lay the blame on him.

Anthony Martial: 5

An isolated figure for much of the game. When he did get the ball, he didn’t make the most of it.

(PA)

Dan James (for Greenwood, 46): 5

Didn’t have the impact United needed.

Andreas Pereira (for Lingard, 65): 4

Couldn’t unlock City’s defence.

Juan Mata (for Shaw, 79): 4

Might have made more of a difference if United weren’t already down to 10 men.

Not used: Romero, Bailly, Jones, Dalot
