Man City unveil new teenage sensation Rico Lewis in comeback win over Sevilla

Manchester City hailed a new starlet as teenager Rico Lewis marked his full debut with a stunning goal.

City boss Pep Guardiola handed 17-year-old Lewis a first start, the right-back responding with a cooly-taken second-half equaliser to justify his manager's faith in him.

Lewis does not turn 18 until later this month, but played with a maturity that belied his age, his goal extending City's unbeaten run at home in the Champions League to 23 games.

On a night when City's supporting cast took centre stage, it was fitting Julian Alvarez, afforded a rare start in the absence of the injured Erling Haaland, plundered the late winner.

Alvarez was City's stand-out player, scoring and setting up City's other two goals, as the 22-year-old took the chance to shine with Haaland not around.

With top spot in Group G already secured, Guardiola was afforded the rare luxury of rotating his squad and giving his fringe players some much-needed game-time.

In addition to Lewis and Alvarez, England Under-21 midfielder Cole Palmer was handed a start, with City fans afforded an exciting glimpse of the future of their club.

There were 90 seconds on the clock when a mistake from Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou, kicking the ball straight to Jack Grealish, ended with the ball finding its way to the feet of Palmer, who scooped his effort just over the bar.

City went close again in the 16th minute, Ruben Dias connecting with a free-kick delivery from Phil Foden, but the centre-back was unable to direct the ball on target.

At the other end, Stefan Ortega, starting a second successive Champions League game in place of Ederson, had to be alert to keep out an angled effort from Rafa Mir, who had outpaced Sergio Gomez down City's right, before trying his luck at the near post.

Mir went agonising close moments later, allowed a free header which he sent back across the goal, the ball bouncing just wide of Ortega's right-hand post, in what amounted to a let-off for City.

Foden and City skipper Ilkay Gundogan combined inside the Sevilla penalty area just before the half-hour mark, the latter's goal-bound shot diverted behind by a timely interception from Marcao.

City went into the game boasting a 100 per cent record against Sevilla, winning all three encounters with the La Liga side scoring nine goals and conceding just twice.

Moreover, Guardiola had lost just two of his 13 games against Sevilla as a manager, winning nine and drawing two, his teams having averaged 2.5 goals against the Spanish side.

But it was the visitors who took the lead in the 31st minute, Isco picking out Mir, unmarked inside the City area and afforded the time and space to guide a header back across the goal and into the far corner.

City went into the break a goal behind, but were back on level terms seven minutes after the restart, Julian Alvarez seizing on uncertainty in the Sevilla defence by picking out Lewis with a sublime pass, the teenager applying an assured finish.

The Blues, buoyed by Wilson's goal, stepped up a gear and increased the tempo, Guardiola bringing on Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, the latter showing his enduring class within moments of coming on.

De Bruyne picked out the run of Alvarez with a sublime pass that dissected the Sevilla back line, the recipient scampering on to the ball before rounding Sevilla keeper Bono, before dispatching a confident finish into the roof of the net.

Alvarez made it two assists and a goal as he teed up Riyad Mahrez for City's third, the winger picking his spot before sweeping the ball past Bono.
