Man City transfer news: De Bruyne successor identified as Silva saga takes another twist

Manchester City have had a busy transfer window as Pep Guardiola has overhauled his squad, signing Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips and selling Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

City suffered a rare setback in the transfer market when they missed out on Marc Cucurella to rivals Chelsea when they refused to pay Brighton's £60million asking price, offering £30million instead. They have completed most of their major signings and the focus now is on who may be leaving the Etihad.

Barcelona are still hankering after City midfielder Bernardo Silva, however, and Mirror Sport has an update about the midfielder and rounded up the rest of the club's transfer news, rumours and gossip.

Bernardo quit claim quashed

Reports emerged on Tuesday morning that Bernardo still wants to quit Manchester City for Barcelona. Guardiola has steadfastly refused to sell Bernardo to Barca and the Catalan giants will struggle to finance the deal without offloading a reluctant Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United. It is understood Barcelona have not given up all hope on landing the Portugal star and Spanish journalist Alvaro Montero told Sky Sports: "Inside the club, there are a few voices that say it is possible; economically is it possible, and they answer ‘yes’. From my point of view, it is almost mandatory to see a player like Frenkie de Jong leave so Bernardo Silva could arrive, but they say that is not a problem. It is a tricky situation for sure." Despite the rumours, it is understood City's stance has not changed; they are looking to keep hold of their midfielder this summer.

De Bruyne replacement

Footballfancast claim Manchester City can land Lucas Paqueta from Lyon for £68million as Kevin De Bruyne's long-term replacement. De Bruyne is 31 and the report claims the 24-year-old Paqueta has the ideal credentials to take over City's playmaking duties. The Brazil star has scored 34 goals and made 21 assists in 186 career appearances for Flamengo, AC Milan and Lyon. He is available for £68million and the report claims he has the quality to succeed De Bruyne long term at the Etihad.

Veratti interest

The Manchester Evening News carry a report from Spain which claims City could sign Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Marco Verratti. It is reported City could move for Verratti if Barcelona succeed in prising Bernardo away from the Etihad. He claims City have identified the midfielder, who won Euro 2020 with Italy last year, as a potential replacement. Verratti is an accomplished and experienced performer and would have the ability to slot straight in at City should they sign him.
