Man City told why Liverpool FC rivalry 'isn't the greatest in Premier League history'

Liverpool legend John Barnes does not believe Manchester City's rivalry with his old club is the greatest in Premier League history.

Jamie Carragher initially claimed that Liverpool vs City had overtaken Manchester United vs Arsenal as the league's greatest ever rivalry. Following a pulsating draw between the two clubs on Sunday, Gary Neville argued that City vs Liverpool currently lacked the 'storylines' which United vs the Gunners benefitted from.

City are preparing to face Jurgen Klopp's team for the second time in six days when they meet in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Saturday. Victory for either side would set up a final with either Crystal Palace or Chelsea.

Ahead of the match, Barnes has surprisingly dismissed his old club's rivalry with the Etihad club. He told BonusCodeBets : "Despite Jamie Carragher’s view, Manchester City vs Liverpool isn’t the greatest rivalry in Premier League history.

"Certainly not at the moment anyway. Particularly when you remember Arsene Wenger vs Sir Alex Ferguson with Arsenal and Manchester United and the way they went head-to-head for years.

" City vs Liverpool is certainly the greatest rivalry if you look at the past three years. When Jürgen Klopp first came in five years ago, the rivalry wasn’t there, so it’s only really developed in the last three.

"If things continue this way, then certainly, it could become the greatest ever. When you look at what Wenger and Ferguson went through together though, it’s just too early to call this [Liverpool vs City ] the greatest."
