Man City star Phil Foden equals Champions League record set by Wayne Rooney at Manchester United

Phil Foden equalled a Champions League record set by Wayne Rooney during Manchester City's thrilling clash against Real Madrid — and the youngster also has a chance to overhaul Rooney when the teams lock horns for a second time at the Bernabeu.

With a place in the Paris final at stake, City and Real served up a seven-goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night and will revive that semi-final showdown in Spain next Wednesday night. But have City done enough to head into that return as favourites?

Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne set Pep Guardiola and his star-studded team on the way last night, while goals from Gabriel Jesus and Foden put them 2-0 and 3-1 ahead on the night. But Real, inspired by Karim Benzema, refused to lie down.

The Frenchman netted twice — including an audacious Panenka from the penalty spot — and Vinicius Jr also scored. Bernardo Silva ensured that City hold a slender 4-3 advantage before the second leg and all of those goals mean that the semi-final clash has gone down in Champions League history.

And for Foden, that comes in a literal sense. Indeed, his rare header against the Spanish champions-elect was his ninth goal in the marquee European competition — more than any player other than Manchester United hero Rooney has managed before their 22nd birthday.

Foden (21 years and 333 days) has time to make that record his own, as well, with a second leg coming next week and the final, incidentally, scheduled for his 22nd birthday on Saturday, May 28. The winners of this mouth-watering tie will meet Liverpool or Villarreal.
