Gary Neville gives verdict on Steven Gerrard sacking and awkward team bus ride
Gary Neville has labelled the timing of Steven Gerrard's sacking a 'joke' while questioning why Aston Villa deemed their dismissal appropriate.
The Liverpool legend was relieved of his duties following a 3-0 defeat by Fulham on Thursday evening, which turned toxic by the end of the 90 minutes as Villa supporters lead chants demanding for the 42-year to 'get out of our club'.
Those fans inside Craven Cottage saw their wish come true as Gerrard was out of a job an hour after the full-time whistle, confirmed by a brief statement released on the club's Twitter account.
The iconic midfielder therefore seemingly travelled back on the team bus knowing he was no longer in charge of the team, something Neville feels was out of order from the West Midlands club.
“One thing I have seen, and I don’t know if it is entirely true, is that Steven Gerrard was sacked straight after the game before the team bus had got back (to Birmingham) or he had chosen to get onto the team bus where he had known that he had been sacked," he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.

Man City summer signing changes mind about Anfield atmosphere after Liverpool game
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji has revealed how the Anfield atmosphere left him shocked during last Sunday's Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
Akanji, a summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund, experienced his first taste of featuring at the home of the Reds and lined up on the right of a City back three that endured a challenging afternoon.
Roared on by those inside the ground, Jurgen Klopp's side were rewarded for their tireless efforts against the champions when Mohamed Salah slotted past Ederson to secure all three points.
Liverpool's win extended City's poor record at Anfield, with the Sky Blues' only win in the last 18 years arriving in the season where no spectators were present inside the stadium due to coronavirus restrictions. Having heard past stories about the difficulties faced of operating in such an intimidating environment, the Swiss defender was initially unimpressed by what he heard but was later swayed as the action got under way.
Before the game, when we walked into the stadium for our warm-up, it was so quiet. No booing or anything. I told Erling [Haaland] I thought it was weird. I expected it would be really crowded and the mood against us. But I felt nothing at all," he told Sportsmail.
