Man City star Kevin de Bruyne in Champions League Team of the Season with four Liverpool players

Kevin de Bruyne is the only Manchester City player in the Champions League 2021/22 Team of the Season as Liverpool and Real Madrid dominate the line-up with four and five representatives respectively.

The 30-year-old City playmaker enjoyed a number of standout moments throughout the competition as he scored the all-important goal in the first-leg against a defensively resolute Atletico Madrid. He then rifled in the opener and assisted against the eventual winners Real Madrid during City's 4-3 first-leg semi-final win, before they suffered heartache as Carlo Ancelotti's side came from behind to book their place in Paris.

In 10 Champions League appearances, De Bruyne notched three assists and two goals with the latter coming at an important stage of the competition for City. The playmaker was in inspired form towards the business end of the campaign and fired Pep Guardiola's side to their fourth Premier League title in five years.

In the team of the season, De Bruyne was part of a midfield trio of Fabinho and Luka Modric who both locked horns in the showpiece match at the Parc des Princes on Saturday. There was no room for Riyad Mahrez, however, who was the joint-fifth top goalscorer after scoring seven goals in the competition — as Vinicius Jr, Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe were nominated by UEFA's 'technical observer panel'.

It is the third successive season that De Bruyne has been named in the Team of the Season after he was named in the team of the campaign in 2021 as well as the squad in 2020. Mahrez was included in last year's XI with incoming striker Erling Haaland also amongst the stars after topping the scorer's chart with 10 goals in eight appearances.

Full squad: Courtois (Real Madrid), Robertson (Liverpool), Van Dijk (Liverpool), Rudiger (Chelsea), Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool); Modric (Real Madrid), Fabinho (Liverpool), De Bruyne (Man City), Vinicius Jr (Real Madrid), Benzema (Real Madrid), Mbappe (PSG).
