Man City speak out over Pep Guardiola contract situation after pipping Liverpool to title

Liverpool supporters could be forgiven for wanting to see the back of Pep Guardiola in the Premier League, but that won't be happening anytime soon if Ferran Soriano gets his way.

The Manchester City CEO has made clear their wish to renew the Spaniard's contract, with his current deal due to end in 2023. However, Guardiola has previously indicated that he won't be rushed into a decision about a new deal until his current one is almost up.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has won four Premier League titles in five seasons with the Sky Blues and after edging out Liverpool in the closing stages of the 2021/22 season on Sunday, Soriano said that he hoped Guardiola would continue as City manager for as long as possible.

Speaking to Catalan radio RAC 1, he said: "The desire is for Guardiola to stay at City forever, why not? It is possible."

Should the 51-year-old agree a new deal, his duel with Jurgen Klopp will continue after the Liverpool boss agreed a new deal of his own for a further two years last month. City's dramatic come-from-behind victory against Aston Villa on Sunday, prevented the Reds from completing an unprecedented quadruple of major honours this season. However, Klopp will have the chance to complete a prestigious cup treble on Saturday when Liverpool face Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris.

If the Reds prevail against their Spanish counterparts, it will be Klopp's second Champions League triumph as Liverpool manager, having appeared in four finals during his tenure. Guardiola is yet to win the Champions League with City, despite his domestic success in Manchester.
