Man City player ratings vs Barcelona with Julian Alvarez lively

Ortega: Beaten too easily for Aubameyang's goal, which spoiled an otherwise confident performance that included a few useful saves. 7

Lewis: What a night for the 17-year-old, even if it was just a half. He showed no trepidation against a star-studded Barcelona attack and pushed forward and inside as Walker does. 7

Walker: A bit of an experiment playing him at centre-back, and one that largely worked with his pace helping him to make some crucial blocks. 7

Dias: It felt like he was playing because of City's injury issues, and he looked tired at times as the defence wobbled - especially in the first half. 6

Gomez: A very promising start in a City shirt. Goalkeeping ineptitude may deny him an assist but he already looks to be on the Guardiola wavelength. 7

Phillips: Still finding his way into the system but plenty of positive play before he worryingly signalled to come off immediately after getting a smash to his forearm. 7

Bernardo: A statement to start him but a quiet evening for Bernardo, who made some decent runs but wasn't able to apply a final product. 5

Palmer: Guilty of missing a few chances but was in the right place to score City's second, and confident enough to return a verbal volley from Dias with interest. 6

Mahrez: He was offside all night and just when it seemed nothing would go his way he played a role in the second goal and then grabbed a late goal himself to level the scores. 6

Foden: A quiet night for him out on the left wing, not erring as much as Mahrez but not involved as much either. 5

Alvarez: Lively from the off, earning his gift of a goal and pressing intensely for more. Should have scored another. 7

Substitutes

Wilson-Esbrand (for Gomez, 46): One good run into the Barcelona box but caught out for the third goal. 6

Cancelo (for Lewis, 46): Played a good part in Palmer's goal and also sent in a vicious shot that Alvarez should have mopped up from. 7

Stones (for Walker, 46): More minutes in the tank that should come in handy sooner rather than later. 6

Rodri (for Phillips, 61): He showed why he remains the top choice in that position. 6

De Bruyne (for Bernardo, 68): Erred for the Barcelona second goal by giving the ball away in the box. 5

Gundogan (for Foden, 68): Made an instant impression as captain with some words for Palmer. 6

Mbete (for Dias, 68): Lost Memphis in the box to allow the former United man to stroke home the winner. 5

Haaland (for Alvarez, 76): Not much time to make an impact. 6

Oscar Bobb (for Mbete, 97): N/A

Not used: Ederson, Carson, Knight
