Man City news: Man United's mistake preventing them from catching City, injury updates

Manchester United have been told they should have hired Diego Simeone to rival Man City rather than Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

The 52-year-old looks set to be appointed as the next Red Devils manager, but it's been claimed that City's bruising encounter with Atletico, proved Simeone was a better appointment to close the gap on Pep Guardiola's side.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has hinted that City could be without two key players for their FA Cup semi-final fixture against Liverpool on Saturday evening. Full back Kyle Walker and playmaker Kevin de Bruyne picked up knocks midweek against Atletico Madrid and are major doubts to take the field at Wembley Stadium this weekend.

Fernandinho could be named in the starting line-up for Saturday's clash and it's been revealed that Reds players have a particular nickname for the Brazilian midfielder.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Man City headlines.

Simeone could catch City

Man City and Atletico Madrid played out a fierce 0-0 draw on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League.

Diego Simeone's side matched up against Pep Guardiola's free-flowing City and stifled them for 90 minutes in a match which saw a scuffle breakout in the tunnel after. The game was reminisicant of a fierce city derby and pundit Paul Merson believes Manchester United have missed a trick in not hiring Simeone and bringing some fire to the Manchester derby.

"He would have been perfect. And imagine what a fight United would put up in Manchester derbies under him," Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.

Walker and De Bruyne update

Man City duo Kevin de Bruyne and Kyle Walker missed training on Friday.

The pair picked up injuries midweek against Atletico Madrid and their absence on the eve of the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool has left them in a race against time to be fit. Guardiola addressed the duo's chances of playing at Wembley and refused to rule out the possibility of them passing late fitness tests.

"We will see tomorrow about De Bruyne and Walker. Ruben Dias trained today and we will see about him. Kyle would have remained on the pitch," said Guardiola.

Liverpool trio's nickname for Fernandinho

Fernandinho is nearing the end of his time at Man City.

The Brazilian midfielder has been a stalwart for the club since signing in 2013, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles and domestic cups. Such as his presence not only for City but also for his national side, the Liverpool Brazilian trio Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino have given him the nickname 'our captain.'

Fernadinho has played over 340 games for Guardiola's side and could feature in the FA Cup this weekend.
