Man City look to bring in new goalkeeper on free transfer

Manchester City are looking to sign goalkeeper Stefan Ortega on a free transfer.

Ortega, 29, has been at Arminia Bielefield since 2017 and was their first choice last season during their relegation from the Bundesliga. With his contract up this summer, the German is exploring other options and open to a move to the Etihad.

City, meanwhile, are happy to bring in another keeper after loaning James Trafford out to Bolton and selling Gavin Bazunu to Southampton. Scott Carson has signed a new deal at the club, while there is no suggestion yet that Ortega coming in would mean Zack Steffen was leaving; Steffen has been Ederson's No.2 for the last two seasons and has primarily played in domestic cup competitions.

Ortega was linked with a move to Bayern Munich earlier this year, when it was indicated that while the goalkeeper wanted to play regularly he would be content with limited game time at a big club. His arrival at the Etihad would further freshen up the squad, with two forwards already signed and further recruitment targeted in midfield and defence.

However, it is unlikely that either Ortega or Steffen would be happy to be third-choice. Steffen is looking to solidify his spot in the US team for the World Cup at the end of 2022, while Ortega has an outside chance of being used by Germany after receiving a call on standby for Euro 2020.

City are looking to conduct as much early business in the transfer market as they can ahead of the first team returning for pre-season training next month.
