Man City left back completes loan move in January transfer window

Manchester City defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand has joined Coventry on loan for the rest of the season.

Wilson-Esbrand, 20, caught the eye of first-team coaches last year and has continued to impress Pep Guardiola. A first-team debut last season in the Carabao Cup against Wycombe - where the back five was solely made up of teenagers - has been followed up this year with a Champions League debut against Copenhagen and further minutes against Sevilla.

The young left-back has had to endure a spell on the sidelines since but has successfully returned to action with the Under-21s. With Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte and Rico Lewis all able to offer competition and cover for Joao Cancelo at left-back, Wilson-Esbrand has taken the decision to move away from the Etihad temporarily to gain a taste of regular first-team football.

He has joined Coventry City, who have overcome a difficult start in the Championship and currently sit in mid-table after just one defeat in their last five games. Wilson-Esbrand will hope to break into the team and stay there over the second half of the season while the Blues will monitor his progress.

The move follows a similar switch for City winger Morgan Rogers, who last week joined Blackpool on loan. With no first-team signings planned for this window, it is expected to be a quiet transfer window at the Etihad with the club having conducted extra business in the summer to build their squad for the season.
