Man City interview hints at Phil Foden boost ahead of Tottenham

Phil Foden could be fit to face Tottenham on Sunday as Manchester City prepare for one of their toughest away tests.

City have never won at the new Spurs stadium, including losing the first leg of their infamous 2019 Champions League quarter-final there, but need a victory to keep pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal. They will travel down to North London without full-back Joao Cancelo, who has been shipped to Bayern Munich after spectacularly falling out of favour at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola could be able to call on Phil Foden for the trip though as the 22-year-old continues his rehabilitation from a foot injury that has kept him out of the last two matches. The midfielder returned to training at the end of last week to raise hopes a return could be soon.

And an interview for the club magazine released on Tuesday referenced that Foden "should be back and available for February's fixtures and beyond". In the piece, the Stockport forward spoke about the need to constantly show Guardiola the effort and desire to earn a first-team place.

"I am just all for the team. I just want to work hard in every opportunity that I get and it is all about just helping the team," he said.. “The manager is going to mix the team up sometimes, but you have always just got to be ready to try and help when you are called upon.

“There is no secret. I think you don’t just get into the City team without deserving it with Pep. You have to show something, and you have to work hard in training. The likes of Rico (Lewis) and Cole (Palmer), they have worked extremely hard to get where they are now and to get the rewards they are getting.

“It is really nice to see because I know how they feel, I have been in their shoes before. It is nice for me to see Academy players alongside me in the first team."
