Man City hit by La Liga FFP complaint amid speculation over Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips

Manchester City have been accused of breaching Financial Fair Play rules in a complaint issued to UEFA by La Liga, raising questions over their reported interest in Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer.

The Premier League champions, along with PSG, are said to have 'continuously breached the current financial fair play regulations’, with the initial complaint filed back in April of this year.

The Whites midfielder has of course been much of the talk heading into the summer months, with Pep Guardiola's side said to be readying a bid for the 25-year-old.

"La Liga understands that the irregular financing of these clubs is carried out, either through direct money injections or through sponsorship and other contracts that do not correspond to market conditions or make economic sense," said La Liga.

"La Liga considers that these practices alter the ecosystem and the sustainability of football, harm all European clubs and leagues, and only serve to artificially inflate the market, with money not generated in football itself."

Much has been made of the accusations by the Spanish top flight's lead bodies, with Erling Haaland's move to City, as well as Kylian Mbappe's decision to stay at PSG said to be a key factor.

La Liga president Javier Tebas said of the Blues deal to sign Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of £51m that will rise to £85.5m: ‘'They must have done something, because (Erling) Haaland asked the clubs for more apart from the €60 (£51m) that has been paid.’'

With Leeds' key man said to cost upwards of £50m this summer, this may serve as a potential boost for fans wishing the player remains at Elland Road.

Phillips has two years left on his current deal in West Yorkshire and has recently returned to full fitness with the England set-up, hoping to kick on and secure a place at this years 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar.

This is not the first time City have had complaints over FFP lodged in the past, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturning a two-year Champions League ban imposed on them for FFP breaches in July 2020.
