Man City defender John Stones hits back at England critics after Hungary defeat

John Stones has called for perspective after England's poor month of Nations League results ended in an awful 4-0 home defeat to Hungary.

Stones was harshly sent off as England fell to one of their heaviest-ever home defeats, to cap a winless month of Nations League fixtures that could see them relegated to League B if they don't win at least one of their remaining clashes with Germany and Italy.

After playing a key role for Manchester City and England over the last 12 months, Stones says he is now looking forward to a rest ahead of the new season, as he reflected on the reaction to England's disappointing results.

England fans at Molineux booed the players after full time and sang 'Sacked in the Morning' at manager Gareth Southgate, as well as voicing their displeasure at him bringing on Harry Maguire after Stones' red card.

Posting on Instagram, Stones said perspective is needed after the result and thanked fans for backing them 'through highs and lows.'

"A disappointing night to end the season but perspective is definitely needed," he wrote.

"Time now for us all to have a break with our families & friends. We will rest, relax and I look forward to what could be a huge season coming up. Thank you to our fans, as always for your support and being behind us through highs and lows."

Southgate accepted full responsibility for the result, but pointed to the fact that he opted to rotate his squad and try less experienced players for the Nations League fixtures so he didn't burn out his more experienced players.
