Man City dealt key blow in title race as Phil Foden forced to pull out of England squad with appendicitis

Manchester City forward Phil Foden has been forced to pull out of the England squad ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine.

The FA have announced Foden underwent surgery to remove his appendix.

The 22-year-old has struggled for form and fitness for much of the season, describing a foot problem to have ruled him out of action for three games as “the worst part” of his career to date.

Gareth Southgate brought the forward off the bench during Thursday night’s win over Italy but will not be able to call upon him at Wembley.

Absences have played a major part of England’s first camp in 2023 with Nick Pope, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount forced to withdraw from the squad.

Chelsea defender Reece James also returned to his club with a slight issue.

“Phil Foden has been ruled out of this evening’s EURO 2024 qualifier with Ukraine following surgery to remove his appendix this morning,” read an FA statement.

“England manager Gareth Southgate has not called up a replacement, meaning he has 20 players to choose from after the earlier withdrawal of Reece James and Luke Shaw’s suspension.”
