Man City could lose key man as Newcastle enter race for £34m Liverpool 'target'

Liverpool got their transfer business up and running when they signed Alexis Mac Allister for an undisclosed fee before the market even reopened - while Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team continue to eye-up further new additions in a push to revamp their midfield options.

Adding craft, guile and creativity to the engine room, Argentina playmaker Mac Allister picked up the No.10 shirt upon his arrival at Anfield. But who else will follow him through the door?

Despite missing out on Champions League qualification, the Reds are still an almighty pull for Europe's top names, but their rivals are also hoping to strengthen. Here, the Liverpool ECHO takes a closer look at the latest up-to-date transfer news and rumours surrounding Premier League clubs;

Manchester City

Catalan giants Barcelona are reportedly confident about signing Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer which would, naturally, serve as a boost to their Premier League rivals.

That's according to reports from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo amid question marks over his immediate future at the Etihad Stadium. Gundogan, 32, captained City to a historic treble last season.

However, with only a few days to run on his existing contract, there has been no agreement made for a potential extension to those terms. As such, Barcelona are poised and ready to swoop for his signature.

Elsewhere, journalist Rudy Galetti reckons City are edging closer to a transfer for Liverpool-linked defender, Josko Gvardiol, as a would-be replacement for Aymeric Laporte. Gvardiol, 21, has been valued at £85m by RB Leipzig and has long-since been mooted with a Premier League move.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has, seemingly, been handed a huge boost over his proposed move for Chelsea star Kai Havertz.

Reports from ESPN underline interest from the Emirates Stadium in Havertz and argue the Germany international has 'rejected' a new contract offer from his current club. The 24-year-old playmaker has two seasons to run on the deal he signed upon joining the west Londoners in September 2020.

Havertz is on around £220,000 per-week at Stamford Bridge and his asking price is claimed to be around the £70m mark. Arsenal and Real Madrid could yet battle it out for the former Bayer Leverkusen man.

Elsewhere, reports from Football Transfers reckon the Gunners are keen to keep Scotland defender Kieran Tierney next season despite interest from elsewhere, Tierney, 25, is said to want more game-time, though, in order to stop him from pursuing a switch.

Manchester United

Atalanta frontman Rasmus Hojlund is 'desperate' to sign for Manchester United this summer.

That's according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, as Liverpool's rivals continue to target a new striker after allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Old Trafford mid-season. England captain Harry Kane, 29, is still top of their shopping list despite concerns over whether or not Tottenham will do business with another Premier League side.

With that in mind, 20-year-old Hojlund is an alternative option for them.

After scoring 16 goals in 42 appearances this season, with seven assists, the Denmark international has, seemingly, been priced up at around €70m. Despite a willingness from all parties to get the transfer done, Romano states that United are only prepared to hand over €60m for Hojlund as they press forward with recruitment plans.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United are the latest club to be mooted with interest in Juventus star Federico Chiesa.

Speculation over the Italy forward and his future remains at fever pitch right now. The 25-year-old has long-since been linked with a switch to Liverpool and those rumours have resurfaced since the market reopens.

However, as per Corriere dello Sport, the player might actually touch down in the Premier League with Newcastle after they booked their place in the Champions League. Juventus are claimed to want £34m for the 41-cap forward, while Bayern Munich, Chelsea and the Reds are namedropped in that same article.

Chiesa himself is thought to be 'open' to a move after growing increasingly frustrated over his squad status.

Chelsea

Reports from 90min indicate that Chelsea have emerged as a possible suitor for in-demand Inter Milan and Italy midfielder Nicolo Barella amid ongoing suggestions Liverpool could target the player.

Barella, 26, helped his side reach the Champions League showpiece last season. He also helped his country reign supreme at the delayed Euro 2020 finals two summers ago.

Amid heavy-handed suggestions Newcastle were about to sign Barella for £50m this summer, incoming Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is understood to be weighing him up as a prime target despite watching the Blues spend £600m last season and then fail to secure a top-half finish.
