Man City confirm departure of second assistant manager this summer

Manchester City have confirmed the departure of assistant manager Rodolfo Borrell.

Borrell leaves after nine years at the club in total and seven as part of Pep Guardiola's backroom staff to take on a new position as sporting director at Austin FC in MLS. City sporting director Txiki Begiristain praised the work of the coach, who spent time with the academy before joining the first team and also took charge of the side for an FA Cup game at Swindon when Guardiola was sidelined with Covid.

“I would like to wish Rodolfo the best of luck in his new role at Austin FC," Begiristain said. "He has played a significant role in the club’s achievements over the past nine years, both as global technical director and after joining Pep Guardiola’s backroom team.

“The manager has often spoken about how important his coaching staff have been helping him and the team achieve what we have. Rodolfo has, of course, been a major part of that during his time at Manchester City.

“I have every confidence that he will be a huge asset to both Austin FC and United States soccer.”

Borrell becomes the second City assistant to leave in a matter of after Enzo Maresca took on the challenge of becoming Leiester's new manager. The Blues are expected to bring in at least one new face, with former assistant Juanma Lillo an option to return after he helped out for the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and final against Inter Milan.
