Man City chairman's transfer comments will worry Leeds United fans amid Kalvin Phillips interest

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has re-affirmed the Premier League champions will strengthen their squad for next season.

Pep Guardiola's side won the Premier League title on the final day of the season with a 3-2 come from behind win over Aston Villa and have already strengthened their forward line for next year with the additions of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. However, they also bid farewell to Fernandinho, which leaves them needing to replace the Brazilian midfielder this summer.

Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips has been earmarked as just one of the players City are keen on signing this summer. The 26-year-old perfectly fits the bill for what Guardiola needs from a defensive midfielder.

Given their resources and Leeds' need to strengthen in other areas, a huge bid from City would likely test the Whites resolve. And Al Mubarak's comments should worry Leeds fans who want Phillips to stay, with the City chairman keen to stress the champions will be adding a few more players this summer ahead of their title defence.

"I can confirm that there will be more players coming in," said the Manchester City chairman in his end of season interview.

"We are looking to strengthen areas we need to strengthen. Every season some players leave and we have to refresh. We will be doing a couple more. We will try to go as fast as we can but it is not always entirely in our control."

"We approach every season to try to win every competition. That has been the case for the last 10 years. You cannot argue in the last six years under Pep, we show up every game with the full intention to try to win."
