Man checks into luxury five-star hotel for one night stay and leaves after 603 days - without paying €55k bill

A man in India has allegedly been staying in one of the country’s top hotels for two whole years without ever paying a cent of his bill.

Police in New Delhi reportedly received a complaint from one of India’s most prominent hotels, the Roseate House. The hotel had claimed that a man had undertaken an elaborate plan which resulted in him skipping out on his room fee for the duration of his stay.

Throughout his whole time in the hotel, which lasted for over 600 days, the man racked up a whopping five million rupee (€55,900).

It is claimed that the scammer initially checked into his hotel on May 30, 2019, when he made a booking for a single night.

However, the man audaciously remained in the hotel right up until January 22, 2022, without ever paying his bill, the Indian Express reports.

It has also been suggested that the unknown scammer did not act alone during his time at the hotel, with a member of staff appearing to have extended their stay despite not receiving payment.

The hotel’s police complaint, as reported by the New Zealand Herald, alleges: “The staff of the hotel allegedly forged, deleted, added and falsified a large number of entries in the account of the said guest in the Opera software system of the hotel.

“The accounts were falsified to conceal the actual outstanding dues from the senior management to avoid detection of their willful illegal acts.”

Although the complaint was filed by the hotel on May 24, so far there have been no arrests regarding the hotel scammer.

Speaking to local media, a member of the police explained: “As per hotel rules, if a guest owes more than 50,000 rupees to the hotel, the staff has to inform the seniors and push the guest for payment. However, this was not done.”
