Man chased and tackled by police after Saints rugby shop theft

A man was chased and tackled to the floor by police after several items were stolen from a rugby shop.

The man was spotted by staff at the Saints store in St Helens town centre, who followed him before pointing him out to a police community support officer. The officer then took chase down Peasley Cross Lane towards Parr.

The 32-year-old was tackled on Phoenix Brow before being assisted by officers from Merseyside Police’s Response and Resolution Team.

Police confirmed a 32-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested over theft from a shop and for an alleged bail offence. He is currently in custody. In a social media post, the local St Helens policing team said: "Everyone wants to get their hands on some Saints merchandise, especially after they were crowned world champions, but a male from the St Helens area decided he didn’t want to pay for it.

"After he had selected several items from the Saints Store and left without paying, vigilant staff followed the male and then pointed him out to Team 3's PCSO Sam who was on foot in the area.

"PCSO Sam gave chase along Peasley Cross Lane and soon ran the suspect down. He was tackled on Phoenix Brow and PCSO Sam showed great hands in detaining him until he was assisted by officers from the Response and Resolution Team.

"The male was kicked into touch (not literally) and taken to the sin bin at St Anne Street Custody Suite."
