Man Charged With Terrorism For Arson Attack On French Synagogue

French Municipal Police

A 33-year-old man has been charged with preliminary terrorism charges following an arson attack on a synagogue in France. The incident occurred last weekend at the Beth Yaacov synagogue in La Grande Motte, a town on the Mediterranean coast.

The suspect, identified only by his initials EHK, stated that the attack was intended to defend Palestinians and prompt a change in Israeli policy. He set multiple fires around the synagogue, resulting in injuries to a police officer during his arrest.

EHK, an Algerian with French residency, appeared before an investigating judge who filed preliminary terrorism charges against him. These charges include attempted murder, arson based on race or religion, and armed violence against police. He has been remanded in custody for further investigation.

Two other individuals suspected of assisting the suspect have also been charged with lesser offenses.

During questioning, EHK admitted to orchestrating the attack to show support for the Palestinian cause and provoke a response from Israeli authorities. While he claimed he did not intend to cause harm, his actions were aimed at instilling fear.

Investigators revealed that EHK had recently exhibited a radicalization of his religious beliefs and expressed a desire to join the conflict in Gaza. He harbored a deep-seated animosity towards Jews, particularly related to the situation in Palestine.

In the lead-up to the attack, EHK acquired a firearm and conducted online research on synagogues in the area, Jewish customs, and holidays. Armed with a handgun, fuel-filled bottles, and an axe inscribed with messages about Palestine and Muslim suffering, he carried out the assault at the synagogue.

The incident has reignited concerns about antisemitism in France, particularly in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Security measures have been heightened at Jewish places of worship across the country in response to the attack.

Caretaker Prime Minister Gabriel Attal condemned the assault, emphasizing that French Jews continue to be targeted due to their beliefs. The authorities are treating the incident with utmost seriousness and are committed to ensuring the safety of all religious communities in France.
