A MAN has been charged with stirring up racial hatred online following a weekend of violent far-right riots in cities in England and Northern Ireland.
Jordan Parlour, a 28-year-old from Seacroft in Leeds, is the first individual to face prosecution for posting content on Facebook which allegedly sought to enflame racial tensions during the riots.
The director of legal services at the Crowd Prosecution Service, Nick Price, said: “We have authorised West Yorkshire Police to charge Jordan Parlour, 28, with using threatening words or behaviour intending to stir up racial hatred.
“The charge relates to alleged Facebook posts between 1 August and 5 August in connection with the violent public disorder across the UK.
“It is extremely important there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Parlour is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of up to seven years in jail.
