A man has been charged with the murder of a teenage boy who was shot dead in Stockwell, south London, the Metropolitan police said.

Lathaniel Burrell, 16, was shot dead in south London on Tuesday. Officers were called to the scene at about 3pm after reports of a shooting on Paradise Road. The teenager died while being treated at the scene by paramedics.

Omar Prempeh, 32, from Forest Hill in south London, has been charged with his murder, the Met confirmed.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “Omar Prempeh, 32, of Stanstead Road, Forest Hill, was charged with murder on Saturday March 8 following the fatal shooting of Lathaniel Burrell.

“Lathaniel, from Stockwell, died at the scene following the shooting in Paradise Road, SW4, on Tuesday, 4 March. He was 16 years old. His family continue to be supported by specialist officers. If you have any information which may help the investigation, please call 101 with the reference 4116/04MAR.”

Prempeh will appear at Bromley magistrates court on Monday.

Florence Eshalomi, the Labour MP for Vauxhall and Camberwell Green, said at the time of the shooting: “Stockwell is a vibrant, diverse, close-knit community. We are going to make sure that there is a visible police presence to reassure people.”

She added: “This is a sad, wasted life; this boy could have had so much potential. His future has been robbed. The family and community will continue to grieve; you can never get over this shock.”

The killing is the first fatal shooting in London this year. There were 13 in 2024 out of a total of 105 homicides recorded by the Metropolitan police in the capital.
