A man with at least seven previous arrests for burglary and public indecency was ordered held without bail Friday after he allegedly sexually assaulted and robbed a woman who had just gotten off a bus in Old Town.

Surveillance cameras recorded Demarlin Brewer, 47, following the woman onto the bus at Grand Avenue and State Street and then getting off the bus after her near Clark Street and Lincoln Avenue, prosecutors said.

As the woman walked on Wells Street, Brewer came up and threatened her with a metal pipe before sexually assaulting her and taking her earrings and a portable computer monitor she was carrying, prosecutors said.

The woman walked home after the attack and called 911. She was taken to a hospital where a sexual assault kit was collected. Investigators also recovered the metal pipe and some of the woman’s belongings from the area where she said she was attacked.

The following day, Brewer was caught on camera breaking into a building in the first block of West Hubbard Street and stealing a package, prosecutors said. Brewer was arrested Wednesday after the building manager recognized him from the surveillance footage and called police.

Brewer was charged with aggravated sexual assault, armed robbery and burglary. He is also facing pending burglary and public indecency charges in two other separate cases, prosecutors said.

Brewer has previous convictions for burglary and robbery, prosecutors said.

Judge Maryam Ahmad ordered Brewer held without bail on the latest charges and set his next hearing for Thursday.
