Man charged with robbing, sexually assaulting sex worker at knifepoint

A Calwell man has been accused of sexually assaulting a sex worker at knifepoint and stealing cash from the worker's residence on March 25.

The man, 34, has been charged with sexual assault in the third degree and aggravated robbery.

ACT Policing in a Tuesday statement said the sex worker contacted them in late March and made the allegations.

A police sexual assault team conducted an investigation and executed a search warrant at a Calwell residence on Monday.

The man was then arrested and charged with the two offences and is set to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The team's officer in charge Detective Inspector Callum Hughes encourages any complainants of sexual assaults to come forward when they are comfortable to do so.

"Police recognise the courage that is required to report your experience of assault and want to reassure victims that we take all matters seriously," Detective Inspector Hughes said.

He said support services were offered and interpreters could be arranged if needed.

To report sexual violence, you may contact ACT Policing on 131 444, attend a police station or report historical matters online through the ACT Policing website.

A Calwell man has been charged and will face court on Tuesday.
