Homicide detectives have charged a man with the murder of his partner after an incident at their family home in Perth's east on Monday night.

The 37-year-old man has been under police guard in hospital since being arrested on Monday night after crashing his car shortly after the woman, 35, was found with critical injuries at their home on Knutsford Avenue in Kewdale.

Police and St John WA paramedics desperately tried to save the woman before she was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where she later died.

The man was arrested on Berwick St in St James after crashing his car less than an hour after he allegedly inflicted fatal wounds on the woman.

A resident said he had stumbled into their home asking for assistance after the crash.

Police allege he also attempted to carry out an armed robbery at a nearby service station on the corner of Kent and Berwick Streets in East Victoria Park.

The man has been refused bail and will face Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday via a bedside hearing from hospital.

He has also been charged with attempted aggravated armed robbery, aggravated home burglary and reckless driving.
