Man charged with murder after woman, 31, found dead in Croydon

Police officers at the scene on Bensham Lane in Thornton Heath - (PA Wire)

A man has been charged with murder after a 31-year-old woman was found dead in Croydon.

Police were called to a home on Bensham Lane in Croydon at around 7pm on January 20 following reports that a woman was unresponsive.

Officers attended the address along with the London Ambulance Service but despite the efforts of the emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Met Police said the victim was 31-year-old Jamelatu Tsiwah, who was from Croydon, on Thursday. Her family are currently being supported by specialist officers.

Larry Nimoh, 21, was charged with murder as well as attempted murder on Wednesday.

Police said Nimoh was known to Ms Tsiwah and there is no wider threat to the community.

He will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

A special post-mortem examination found Ms Tsiwah’s cause of death was due to neck compression.

Formal identification has now taken place.

A second 21-year-old man who was arrested for murder has been bailed pending further investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila who is leading the investigation said: “Today’s update will bring some reassurance to Jamelatu’s family and the community, we have worked tirelessly to secure a charge and build a picture of events as to what happened on Monday evening.

“Our investigation is progressing at pace, and I would like to thank the local community for their support whilst we have carried out our enquiries over the past few days.

“We have specialist officers in place to provide support to Jamelatu’s family. We ask that you respect their privacy at this sad time.

“I am still keen to hear from anyone who may have been in Bensham Road on Monday between 18:00hrs and 19:00hrs. I would like to hear from you if you think you may have seen something suspicious taking place, or if you saw someone fleeing from the property on Bensham Lane. Any information is important to us and we take every report and reflect it into our investigation.”

It comes as police separately launched a murder probe into the death of a 43-year-woman at a flat in Woolwich on Friday evening.

Detectives leading that case said Marianne Kilonzi, who worked as a banker for Citi, was thought to have been beaten to death at a property in Argyll Road.

Officers are hunting a suspect, thought to be known to Ms Kilonzi, over her death, but no arrests have yet been made.

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 5952/20Jan.
