A 28-year-old has been charged with murder after a man was stabbed in the face and head at Ipswich, west of Brisbane on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to a unit on Mine Street, Redbank, at about 10:30pm.

The 63-year-old Riverview man died on the way to hospital.

Detective Inspector David Briese said the Boronia Heights man is in custody.

"Detectives from Ipswich are working to determine what happened leading up to the male being stabbed," he said.

"It was a very confronting scene, obviously significant wounds to the deceased and a lot of blood," he added.

The man has also been charged with drug possession and threats to kill.

Three people — the two men, and a 30-year-old woman — were in the unit when the stabbing happened, police said.

Police said the men knew each other, but their relationship is not yet clear.

The man is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday.
