A man is behind bars charged with murder after the discovery of a body in a suburban backyard.

Emergency services were called to a home about 6pm Sunday at Primrose Place in Farmborough Heights near Wollongong in the NSW Illawarra region.

Paramedics found a 74-year-old man with reported head injuries dead in the property's backyard.

A 48-year-old man, who multiple media outlets reported as the victim's son, was arrested and charged with murder on Monday night.

He remains in custody after a mention at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday and is due before the same court again on Friday.

Police have called for witnesses in the area between Thursday and Sunday to come forward.
