A 20-year-old man has been charged with intending to injure or alarm the Queen following an incident at Windsor Castle last year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.
Jaswant Singh Chail, from Southampton, was caught carrying a crossbow in the grounds of the Queen’s residence on Christmas Day 2021. Scotland Yard said he has been charged under section two of the Treason Act, 1842, which is “discharging or aiming firearms, or throwing or using any offensive matter or weapon, with intent to injure or alarm her Majesty.”
The Queen was celebrating Christmas with other members of the Royal Family in the castle at the time, including Princes Charles and Edward. Police said Chail had been arrested within "moments" of entering the grounds.

Nick Price, head of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said the CPS has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Chail “after he was arrested in the grounds of Windsor Castle on 25 December 2021 carrying a crossbow. The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Chail are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.”
The 20-year-old is currently in custody and will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 17.
