A 20-year-old man has been charged with assault for allegedly slapping Jack Grealish at Old Trafford after Sunday’s 0-0 draw between Manchester City and Manchester United.

Grealish is said to have been near the tunnel at the Stretford End when the man is alleged to have struck him as the City player made his way off the pitch.

Greater Manchester Police have said the man will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on July 14.

"This charge relates to an incident which took place at Old Trafford," Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

United and City have both declined to comment.

Grealish came on as a 74th-minute substitute at Old Trafford, where his City team-mate Phil Foden was abused by United fans who chanted about his mother.

After the game, City manager Pep Guardiola said fans who chanted about Foden’s mother lacked “class”. Both United and City condemned the chants.

“[It was a] lack of class,” said Guardiola. “But it’s not United, it’s the people [supporters], you know? We are so exposed in ¬football – managers, owners, and football players especially.

“Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the ¬people ¬involving the mum of Phil, it’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”
