Man charged over ‘homophobic’ attack on couple in Brixton heading home from Black Pride

A suspect is set to appear in court charged with an alleged homophobic attack on two men waiting for a bus in south London.

Jabbard Mabounda, 31, is accused of assaulting the couple, in their 30s and 40s, on Brixton Road.

The men - heading home from Black Pride - were standing at a bus stop when they were approached by an unknown man who began punching them both in the head at around 10.30pm on August 19.

They went to hospital for treatment to their injuries before being discharged.

Police said at the time they were treating the incident as a homophobic attack.

Mabounda, of Crosby Walk, Brixton is due before Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with racially or religiously aggravated actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Both victims are being supported by a dedicated LGBT+ community liaison officer.

“Their role is to support individuals who have been involved in hate crimes towards the LGBT+ community.”
